Moreover, on Sundays you can see a live show where ironworkers in period dress work the iron using traditional methods (every Sunday of the year, except November to March when it is only open the first Sunday of the month). The Ironworks produced iron following ancient methods, using a low, open furnace that worked non-stop day and night. It was loaded by alternating layers of charcoal and mineral ore that had previously been baked and reduced. The operation took about 4 hours and, by injecting air with a pair of bellows situated behind the furnace, temperatures of between 1,200 and 1,300 șC were reached. The result was a red, sticky mass of iron, which was immediately taken to the anvil where it was forged with the mallet whilst a worker held it in place with the tongs. In this way, they eliminated the slag and managed to improve the quality of the iron |
